Apparently the Pope has noticed less and less people coming into the catholic church for confession, and on Monday March 10th the Vatican News issued a report on the "New 7 Deadly Sins"
The Pope recognizes that sins in the past were primarily individual, but now have social due to globalization. This does have some validity in it, but primarily it seems like its a way to guilt people in coming back to the catholic church for confession.
What is on the list of the new 7 Deadly Sins?
Drug Pushers
Obscenely Rich (isn't the Vatican fairly wealthy?)
Environmental Polluters
Manipulative genetic experiments
Abortion
Social Injustice
Pedophilia
How does it match up with the 7 deadly sins of the old along with their punishments?
Pride Broken on the wheel
Envy Put in freezing water
Gluttony Forced to eat rats, toads, and snakes
Lust Smothered in fire and brimstone
Anger Dismembered alive
Greed Put in cauldrons of boiling oil
SlothThrown in snake pits
I wonder what punishment the new 7 deadly sins will be? Also those sins are very important to recognize, some of which I think the Catholic Church is dealing with head on (i.e. pedophilia). I think its great that Catholic Church is recognizing that culture has changed since the middle ages, but it seems like a message of hope and of love is better than a message of death and eternal damnation of hell.
