I am back from my trips, and have had some time to catch back up. I apologize for not getting this out to you earlier but its been very hectic lately so I had to take a few days away from blogging.
OK, one last thing before we answer the question we sought out to answer in the first place. When reading the scriptures, especially in big chunks like chapters, books, etc. its always good to reflect on what this is saying about who God is at His core. Many times we look at scripture and we forget that it all revolves around God.
So, what does Genesis 1 say about who God is at the core?
Even at the beginning, God at the core of who he is, is in the midst of darkness. This is huge and important to sit on for a bit. God is not a god who is outside of this world, and is only recognized when "good" things happen. God is hovering over the darkness, the emptiness, and the chaos found in our individual lives and in this world. He is certainly not detached from that.
The God of the bible is a God who is in the midst of the darkness, longing to fill it with life. Another way of saying this is God is in the midst of dysfunction, and longs to bring it into function. God loves transformation and life, and he knows how to create that in our lives and in the world.
Some of my favorite people to be around are the ones that know the darkness and depravity their lives were filled with. These people know what grace and transformation looks like and feels like because they were willing to let God be God and bring life to their dark areas.
So this chapter isn't just about God creating the earth, its about the cosmos, the world, people, us, and God being God in us, around us, and through us.
